To the Femmes

As a little Christmas present to my lovely wife, and to all of you lovely femmes out there, I thought I’d post this lovely piece I found about a month ago & have been meaning to link to.

Does anyone else find it odd that Valkyrie comes out tomorrow? I mean, a movie about Hitler on the same day that all the Jewish folks go to the movies? Okay, it’s about killing Hitler, but still.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Happy Chanukah

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah: peace to all of my Jewish friends who will light that first meaningful candle tonight. Chanukah lasts 8 nights, which means this year it will last past the 12 days of Christmas, up until the 29th. (That’s for those of you who aren’t Jewish/don’t live in New York.)

Ready for WI

So I’m crazy, apparently, full on. Today it snowed and sleeted and hailed in Brooklyn, but mostly it started as snow, & it was beautiful to wake up with our trees – out the front window & the back – outlined so beautifully with the stuff. I really do love the snow.

I had an appointment to get my haircut, which meant I had to go out in it, too, so I put on my new winter boots (and coat, and hat, and scarf, and gloves) and walked to my appointment about a half a mile (10 blocks) away. The one thing I noticed is that I’m not so gingerly on the icy snow anymore; I walked in it so much last winter, in WI, and I find it funny to see my fellow NYers moving along very, very slowly.

The boots held up well, & Betty says I look like Wheeler, now, so I’m ready to go. I really do love the snow and the cold, love it. It makes me feel alive in a way that’s pretty astounding.

Full Moon

There is one tonight, and it’s beautiful, but damned if everyone I know is acting like a loon lately. Hopefully that will diminish in pace with the moon’s wane.

Queer Christmas

Oh boy! Queer Christmas TV! Rufus Wainwright making cookies with Martha Stewart and his own mother. A bunch of the rest of the family – like Martha and Anna McGarrigle – are in the audience, all of them wearing sweaters Kate McGarrigle made.

The McGarrigles were in town to perform The McGarrigle Christmas Hour at Carnegie Hall last night.

He mentions his boyfriend, losing his ski sweater in a disco in Paris, and opera – more than once. Way too cute.

Grand Hyatt DC

This may seem silly, but I’m stupidly pleased because I got a package today from the Grand Hyatt, where I stayed in DC for the Blogger Conference – pleased because they sent me my (only) Ben Sherman shirt and a good jacket that I’d left behind in the closet.

I have never had a hotel locate something I left behind and send it to me before, and never imagined they’d get it to me that quickly.

I’m very, very impressed. (They were also great about answering questions, giving directions, & calling cabs.)

Virus

I may not be posting a whole lot because my lovely little donated laptop has caught a nasty little virus. I’m working now on a very old computer, but at least us two geeks had a backup around for me to use.

I’m running an extensive virus scan in hopes that it can be fixed, but I’m pretty sure already that I’ll have to wipe it & start all over again. It really is a good thing that I got into the habit of putting all my files on an external drive the last time I had a computer crash.

& I found out today I have to go on cholesterol meds.
& Our rent is going up January 1st.

I’ve had better days.

Buying Stuff

& So it begins: the holiday season.

Did any of you go shopping yesterday? I didn’t, but then, I never do. My holiday shopping is (at best) erratic, and usually kind of last minute. Many Xmases ago, Betty & i went shopping together, & since then that’s closer to what we do: decide on whatever amount of money we can spare & then we just go out shopping together, & buy each other stuff we like.

But mostly I’m not big on stuff anymore; we have too much already, & our 1BR apt is packed to the gills. What I’d like is for someone to come clean our place, instead. Maybe it’s a sign of age, but stuff just means I need to clean out some stuff I already own to make room for the new stuff. & Somehow I feel a George Carlin routine coming on.
